Trump to launch new NFT collection amid presidential campaign
Donald Trump says he plans to launch a new series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) as he campaigns for US president.
In an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, Trump said he will release a fourth NFT collection that crypto enthusiasts will be able to buy and collect.
Previous NFT collections have featured images of Trump in heroic, almost mythical poses.
In the Bloomberg interview, Trump said of NFTs: “I’m going to do another one, because people want me to do another one. It’s an unbelievable spirit. Beautiful.”
Non-fungible tokens are digital images recorded on a blockchain that are used to certify ownership and authenticity. NFTs are often referred to as “digital art,” and people collect them like paintings or trading cards.
News of the NFT collection comes as the cryptocurrency industry has rallied behind Trump’s campaign and the former president has embraced digital assets, vowing not to regulate the industry.
In May, Trump’s presidential campaign began accepting cryptocurrency donations.
A report from The Wall Street Journal says that Trump’s team received $3 million in cryptocurrency donations in the second quarter of this year.
Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, is also pro-cryptocurrency and anti-regulation.
During the Bloomberg interview, Trump said of crypto: “It’s not going away. It’s amazing.”
However, Trump’s recent comments are a turnaround from the past, when he was a vocal critic of digital assets.
But the former president has now told Bloomberg Businessweek that: “If we don’t do this, China will adopt the system and have cryptocurrencies.”
The price of Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, is currently at $64,800, having risen 47% this year.
