Ledger raises price for Stax, launches new ‘Flex’ wallet

French cryptocurrency storage company Ledger has announced a 40% price hike for its Ledger Stax hardware wallet — just three months after its initial launch — and is launching a new, cheaper version.

O Stax Ledger, which was initially launched for $279, will now be available for $399. This device, designed by Tony Fadell, the inventor of the iPod, features an E Ink display and is being shipped to customers who pre-ordered the product in May.

Along with this price change, Ledger has launched a new, more affordable option, the Ledger Flex. Priced at $249, the Ledger Flex is smaller than the Stax and includes a 2.8-inch E Ink display.

Device Features and Future Update

Both Ledger Stax and Flex support a variety of cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin ($BTC), Ethereum ($ETH), Cardano ($ADA) and Solana ($SOL), as well as NFTs. They allow users to manage private keys, which are crucial for cryptocurrency transactions, and view NFTs through their E Ink displays.

A new software update for these devices will introduce two-factor authentication, allowing users to log in to various online services using their Ledger Flex or Stax, using near-field communication (NFC) technology to facilitate login approvals.

Ledger also offers its own cryptocurrency trading service, called Ledger Live. Ledger Stax and Flex users can pair their devices with the Ledger Live app to verify device authenticity, receive the latest operating system updates, and install apps.

Community reactions to the new device launch

The announcement has received criticism from community members, with many users expressing frustration over delays in fulfilling Ledger Stax pre-orders, some of whom have been waiting for several months.

Some have expressed discontent over the timing of the new product launch, with some saying the focus should have been on delivering pre-ordered Stax devices before introducing new offerings. These delays were partly due to supplier bottlenecks affecting the device’s display.

Since then, the company has been working to resolve supply chain issues in preparation for the recent launch of Ledger Flex, which is now available for purchase starting July 26 with immediate shipping.
