Kamala Harris: A Summer of Bratwurst? Meme Coin Traders Are in on the Game
Shortly after the Vice President Kamala Harris has been approved by Joe Biden to be the Democratic presidential nominee on Sunday, she received what is being hailed as a culturally relevant endorsement from pop star Charli XCX.
Somehow, it also sparked the resurgence of a dead meme coin, which quickly skyrocketed to a market cap of $5 million.
“Kamala is a kid,” the British artist posted on Twitterin reference to his latest album “Brat,” which had already garnered a cult following and inspired countless think pieces before Harris’ apparent nomination.
This sparked the start of a campaign that captured the attention of young voters. THE Harris Headquarters Twitter And Instagram The account changed its graphics to resemble the Brat album cover and began using Charli XCX songs in its Tick Tock videos. Harris headquarters Twitter account doubled the number of subscribers overnight, amid growing media hype.
Solana Brat Summer token (KID) was created via the coin platform Pump.fun on July 17, before Harris’ campaign adopted the meme. Instead, the coin’s creator apparently focused solely on the meme stemming from Charli XCX’s album and the “Brat Summer” trend that followed.
Charli XCX has been promoting the concept of a “Brat Summer” alongside the launch of her critically acclaimed album. In a BBC Sounds In an interview, Charli said that a “Brat summer” is both luxurious and trashy.
“This girl who’s a little messy and likes to party, and sometimes talks nonsense, who feels like herself but also maybe has a nervous breakdown,” Charli XCX said in a TikTok explaining the meaning of “Brat”.
Essentially, having a “Brat Summer” means letting loose, maybe drinking a little too much, and wearing a lot of neon green, a reference to Brat’s album cover. And Charli XCX apparently sees Harris, the younger, more fiery vice president who is taking over from Joe Biden in an attempt to keep Democrats in the White House, perpetuating that vibe in some way.
Despite the meme’s success in popular culture, the token didn’t see immediate success and the project seemed dead. It failed to reach the decentralized exchange (DEX) Raydium, which is achieved when a token on Pump.fun reaches a market cap of around $60,000. Some investors believe the developer has abandoned the project.
Hours before Charli XCX’s tweet, a community takeover—in which traders attempt to collectively run the abandoned project, including with a new Twitter, Telegram, and website—managed to give the project some momentum, soon pushing it onto Raydium.
When Charli XCX tweeted praise for Kamala Harris, the token jumped from a market cap of $5,000 to $105,000. Once Harris adopted the meme, the token skyrocketed to a market cap of just under $5 million over the next two days. It has since fallen to a market cap of $2.6 million.
Meme coins are highly volatile assets that often have a extremely short lifespan— especially relatively low-cap tokens like BRAT. They’re also often subject to pump-and-dump schemes by developers, and limited liquidity can make it difficult to exit positions when prices drop. So it’s important to exercise caution when investing in cryptocurrencies like this.
Now, the community takeover KID symbolizes both the original “Brat Summer” meme and its recent revival thanks to Harris’ campaign. Her Twitter account reposts Harris Brat edits as well as others, non-political Kids themed content.
Harris’ embrace of the Brat meme has generated additional excitement around her campaign and seemingly boosted the meme’s popularity. But not everyone agrees, which is hardly surprising given the already divisive rhetoric surrounding the election.
American conservative commentator Greg Gutfeld called Harris “an unserious person.” Fox Newsbefore asking: “Do you really want kids running this country? They’re doing enough damage already.”
