Cristiano Ronaldo Faces $1 Billion Lawsuit Over Past NFT Sales With Binance Amid Legal Challenges For Founder Changpeng Zhao
Previous NFT events featuring Cristiano Ronaldo have included non-digital benefits such as a premium experience in which holders received an invitation to play football with the legendary player himself as a promotional initiative by Binance.
In November 2023, Cointelegraph reported that a class action lawsuit was filed against the football sensation in a US district court in Florida regarding his past involvement in NFT collection sales with Binance.
According to the authors of the action, “Ronaldo linked coordination to the promotion, assistance and/or active participation in the offer and sale of unregistered securities”. Ronaldo should have been aware that Binance was involved in such activities.
The action against Cristiano Renaldo originated from Binance’s background legal disputes, which culminated in the conviction of founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao for facilitating fraudulent activities in the United States. In April 2024, he was sentenced to four months in prison for his alleged involvement in a money laundering scheme.
