Coins Inspired by Trump Shooter Traded for Hours Before FBI IDs Him

Moments after shots were fired at the presumptive Republican presidential nominee this year, a series of Trump-related tokens were minted via the Solana coin factory. Pump.fun complaints that more than 1,000 Trump-related tokens were launched using the platform before the US president Joe Biden “made a statement,” according to a tweet.

Some of these tokens attempted to identify the shooter, but many were wrong.

A well-known rumor claimed that a man named Mark Violets was the alleged “antifa extremist” behind the assassination attempt. Photos and videos of the alleged shooter spread on social media, and in turn, a number of tokens were created on Pump.fun, the photo and video sharing site of the gunman. the most successful which, with the token name TSHOOTER, reached a market capitalization of $200,000.

But that rumor was quickly dispelled after it was revealed that the man in the photos was Marco Violian Italian sports journalist who was in no way involved in the incident.

“The information circulating on my account is completely unfounded and organized by a group of hateful people who have been ruining my life since 2018,” Violi said on Instagramaccording to a translation. “On Monday, I will file a complaint against the X accounts that invented this fake news and all the media outlets that are spreading it,” he added, further imploring people “to politely leave me alone.”

As the hours passed, conspiracy theories continued to appear and disappear as new details circulated. Soon, an explicit photo allegedly of the deceased shooter was used to create a Pump.fun token.

An hour later, the The New York Post identified the shooter as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20. Within three minutes of the post, a Pump.fun token was created using the shooter’s name. Just 15 minutes after its creation, the token reached a market capitalization of $265,000.

It took the FBI nearly 10 hours to issue a statement confirming that Crooks was indeed the shooter. By this point, most of the Crooks-related tokens had fallen far from their peak prices due to the attention paid to the Meme coins are gone.

Instead, the broader cryptocurrency market began to rise as the failed assassination attempt on Asset—the presidential candidate perceived as pro-cryptocurrency—appears to be strengthening his candidacy for the election. The odds of Trump winning the election have also increased on the leading crypto market prediction platform Polymarket.
