Base Meme Coin Normie Deletes Video Depicting Suicide, Following Backlash

Basic chain piece of money Normie apologized after posting a video showing a suicide in an attempt to pump his token.

The now deleted video (screenshot here; warning: disturbing content) showed the character Normie hanging himself, being buried in a cemetery, and then encountering a God-like figure. The deity tells Normie that they must repay the community and reboot their way back to Earth. Then the character jumps out of his grave with news reports declaring, “Death is no problem.”

With the relaunch underway, the Twitter account posted promotional videos. Previous posts have generally been met with positivity as the project attempts to recover from its feat. But this time, it apparently went too far.

Crypto Twitter is in turmoil, with users suggesting that “Normie encourages suicide” or that traders should “put this atrocity to rest once and for all” due to “disgusting content.” Well-known crypto influencer Ansem simply replied“Jesus Christ.”

Ultimately, the project deleted the tweet containing the video.

“We have decided to delete our last video”, a message on Twitter explain. “It was never our intention to trivialize a sensitive subject.”

Instead, the post claims the video was intended to explain that there is always a way out despite the brutal depiction of suicide. “The intern who posted it has been fired,” the post reads, although the concept of an intern being fired after a poorly received tweet has become something of a meme in the crypto space.

Decrypt reached out to the Normie team for additional comment and clarification on this point, but did not immediately receive a response.

The move received mixed responses from traders. In particular, some community members lamented that a the intern would have been fired for the position, because they believed that others were responsible for what happened. Some have speculated that the intern’s dismissal was due just kiddinggiven the meme.

Like most meme coins, NORMIE trading has been very volatile over the past 24 hours, with prices rising and falling, but that is now the case. down 16% in the last 24 hours at the current price of around $0.033.
